Types of Tail Lifts

There are various types of tail lifts available on the market. The differences in lifting capacity, functionality, and operational cycle time mean that some types of tail lifts are better suited for specific uses.

The 5 Main Types of Tail Lifts

1. Column Tail Lifts

Column tail lifts are mounted on vertical columns at the rear of the vehicle. They offer excellent ground clearance and are ideal for vehicles that need to access loading bays at various heights. The platform can be raised and lowered vertically along the columns.

2. Rear Frame Column Tail Lifts

Similar to column lifts but with the columns mounted within the vehicle's rear frame. This design provides additional protection for the columns and is commonly used on refrigerated vehicles where maintaining the cold chain is essential.

3. Tuckaway Tail Lifts

Tuckaway tail lifts fold up and store underneath the vehicle when not in use. This design maintains the vehicle's rear doors functionality and is popular on box vans and curtain-siders. They're particularly useful for urban deliveries where space is limited.

4. Cantilever Tail Lifts

Cantilever tail lifts extend out from the vehicle and then lower to ground level. They provide excellent reach and are ideal for vehicles that need to bridge gaps between the vehicle and loading dock. The platform can also tilt for easier loading.

5. Retractable Tail Lifts

Retractable tail lifts slide out from under the vehicle and can be completely hidden when not in use. This design is perfect for vehicles where aerodynamics and appearance are important, such as high-end delivery vehicles or exhibition trucks.

Choosing the Right Tail Lift

The right tail lift depends on several factors:

  • Vehicle type and size
  • Typical load weights
  • Loading environment (urban vs. rural, dock vs. roadside)
  • Frequency of use
  • Budget considerations

Maintenance and Safety

Regardless of the type, all tail lifts require regular maintenance and LOLER examinations to ensure safe operation. Fleet-Serv provides comprehensive maintenance and repair services for all types of tail lifts from all major manufacturers.
