LOLER Thorough Examination Service with Fleet-Serv
Often businesses who operate or have control over lifting equipment have a statutory duty to follow LOLER regulations. In general this type of equipment is classed as work equipment therefore Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) also applies. This typically includes inspection and maintenance. More importantly, businesses who are involved with lifting operations and equipment must ensure it is planned by a competent engineer who is appropriately supervised and carried out in a safe manner. LOLER requires lifting equipment to be functional for purpose, suitable for the task and appropriately marked. In several cases, this is referred to ‘thorough examination’. Failure to comply with these regulations could result businesses receiving a hefty fine or even worse imprisonment.
What is a LOLER examination?
The LOLER Regulation 1998 requires that all lifting equipment is regularly examined for defects which could be or are an immediate hazard to individuals. This is documented by statutory thorough examination. The whole examination must be undertaken by a competent engineer.
Why does your Tail Lift need a LOLER?
Let’s define to you why it’s appropriate. The stationary thorough examination performed on lifting equipment will help to identify any immediate dangers to your employees as well as any items that may become a danger to your employees over a period of time. Failure to conduct an adequate examination and any required maintenance work may result in your employees using equipment that is unsafe, resulting in injury, serious injury, or, in extreme cases, fatality.
How often should a Tail Lift be inspected?
Within the regulations there are two legal requirements. First, lifting equipment which carries employees must undergo a statutory thorough examination completed at least once every six months. Lifting equipment that does not carry personnel must have a statutory thorough examination completed at least once every twelve months. This is also the minimum legal requirement. Furthermore regulation state that where in examiners believe an examination is required more frequently or within less time. It is ultimately up to the examiner to determine how often the equipment needs to be inspected. In this case it may be advantageous towards your company. What’s more is most fleet operators will also complete an annual weight test on lifting equipment. It is not a legal requirement, but the industry does it all the time.
